how do you think they’d react? are they conservative?? honestly, i don’t really know of a good time to talk about it, I just did it at times where nothing else was being said and we were all being a “happy, functional family”, maybe look for those times. i never sat them down and was like, “mom, dad, i’m a homo.” i just dropped hints from when i was like really little onwards and as i got older i would say stuff like, “dad, i got that girls number isn’t she pretty omg!!!” and whatever. i made them come to the conclusion themselves, and when tyler clementi died last year my mom and i got confrontational with each other and i cemented the fact i was gay during an argument. not the best way, but whatever, it’s not like she didn’t know already.
SO. i think maybe you can drop little hints, if you think they wouldn’t freak out at the mere implication of you being homo? or wait for a time where you and your family are all together in a kind of boring but happy lull, maybe after dinner, and be like, “so i know this might be weird for you but i have a girlfriend and i wanted you to know and hopefully support me.” hopefully that works? be prepared to defend yourself. understand their reactions might not be the best, but also that your happiness does not necessarily depend on their approval. my mom is still not what i’d call supportive (she is in asian mother denial most of the time) but then when she first told me homosexuality was a disease i immediately shot back that that argument is a sick outdated one and i didn’t care what she thought, and i never really did, and if she felt that way fine, i just wouldn’t invite her to my future wedding and she can feel bad about being a shitty mother when i walk down the aisle with the one i love.
