The already tight budget for Velvet Goldmine was slashed by a million dollars right before the shoot started. One of the things that saved the film was the expertise of Production Designer Christopher Hobbs. Here he creates the illusion of a majestic crumbling ballroom for Maxwell Demon’s performance of Tumbling Down using a few painted flats. Transformed by the lighting and chandelier, the result is breathtaking on screen. An equally detailed miniature was also made for Todd Haynes and DP Maryse Alberti to block the action. Designed by Hobbs, painted by Simon Hague.
